First generation girl group S.E.S makes comeback
SEOUL, Nov. 28 (Yonhap) — Hit 90s girl group S.E.S. made a comeback after a 14-year hiatus with a new remix of a past hit, its agency said on Monday.
The first generation K-pop trio released its latest single “Love [Story],” a remix of dance-pop track “Love,” the band’s management S.M. Entertainment said in a press release. The original song was the title track on S.E.S.’ third full-length album released on Oct. 29, 1999.
Within hours of its release, “Love [Story]” ranked within the top 5 of major music streaming services here, including Olleh Music, Soribada, Naver Music and Bugs Music.
The single is the first release on S.E.S.’ return project “Remember,” an event that celebrates the veteran girl group’s 20th anniversary. The second release will come on Jan. 1, 2017, with the group set to drop one of two lead singles off its next EP.
Since its debut in 1997 with the LP “I’m Your Girl,” S.E.S. gained fast popularity among K-pop fans until its disbandment in 2002. Along with its biggest rival Fin.K.L, which debuted in 1998, S.E.S. emerged as one of the key first generation K-pop idol groups. Contemporaries of the time include boy bands like Sechs Kies, Shinhwa and H.O.T.
In the 14 years since S.E.S. left the K-pop scene, two of its members, Shu and Eugene, have married and are mothers. Thanks to the recent resurgence of 90s trends in the K-pop scene, S.E.S. has joined the nostalgia train with other contemporary artists, including Sechs Kies and N.R.G.
The 90s music market is expected to heat up towards the year-end, with more first generation bands, namely SS301 and Fin.K.L.’s Lee Hyori, having already announced their comeback plans.
