Fuji TV apologizes for mistranslating Koreans as saying ‘I hate Japan’
A Japanese television network formally apologized Monday for a mishap in which it inaccurately translated a South Korean woman as saying “I hate Japan because it tormented Korea,” when her actual statement was more along the lines of “[South Korea] has a rich culture. I think that’s why many foreigners visit us.”
Fuji TV faced mounting criticism from viewers over the weekend regarding the mishap.
The network even received accusations of allegedly drumming up anti-Korean sentiment in the wake of the 50th anniversary of both Japan and South Korea mending ties.
Fuji TV denied the claims though and blamed the incident on human error.
The segment titled “Why Koreans hate the Japanese so much” aired on the show “Akira Ikegami Kinkyu Special,” on June 5 according to The Japan Times.
