‘Gangnam Style’ exceeds maximum number of YouTube views
SEOUL (Yonhap) — “Gangnam Style,” a mega-hit single by South Korean rapper Psy, exceeded the maximum number of YouTube views Wednesday, prompting the website to upgrade its system.
“We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (= 2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY,” YouTube wrote in the comments section below the video. “‘Gangnam Style’ has been viewed so many times we have to upgrade!”
The move came after users pointed out that the view count was not increasing even as they clicked on the video, according to pop industry officials here.
Uploaded on July 15, 2012, “Gangnam Style” topped 100 million views on the 52nd day and 1 billion views on the 161st day. In May this year, it became the first YouTube video to garner 2 billion views.
As of 10:45 p.m. Wednesday (Korean time), the video had 2.152 billion views.
