‘Gentleman’ tops K-pop YouTube chart
By Park Jin-hai
Korean rapper/singer Psy kept a relatively lower profile this year, but his “Gentleman” still ranked as the most viewed K-pop music video on YouTube.
According to the YouTube’s “2013 Kpop Music Videos,” announced on Tuesday, “Gentleman” reached 600 million views. The video which was released in April has generated less sensation than his international viral hit “Gangnam Style.” But it surpassed 100 million views on YouTube within the shortest period of time, as well as becoming the most viewed video in a single day
Girls’ Generation’s “I Got a Boy” came in second. It’s the same song that won the Video of the Year at YouTube Music Awards for the group last month in New York. However, the girls’ group succeeded in placing two more songs ― “Dancing Queen” and “Galaxy Supernova,” sung in Japanese ― in the top 10, at fifth and sixth, respectively.
All-boy group EXO’s “Growling” and “Wolf and the Beauty” came in third and fourth, respectively. F(x) was ranked seventh with “First Love,” followed by Super Junior-M’s “Break Down” and 2NE1’s “Falling in Love.” The K-pop girl group 4minute placed tenth with the music video for “What’s Your Name?”
YouTube announced the rankings based on the views on its site from November 2012 to November 2013.
In a separate survey of the most popular domestic YouTube channels, Psy, SM Town and Big Bang were found to have the most subscribers, in that order. Jung Sung-ha, a guitarist who rose to stardom by posting his video, came in fourth.
Mnet’s channel placed seventh. MBC’s K-pop and entertainment channels placed ninth and tenth.
Samsung Electronics’ official YouTube channel, “Samsung Mobile,” became the one and only corporate YouTube channel included in the top 20.
