K-Town senior center offers free medical check-ups, flu shots
By The Korea Times Los Angeles staff
The Koreatown Senior and Community Center in Los Angeles began offering free medical examinations Wednesday to promote better health among locals.
Jointly organized by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the Los Angeles Department of Aging, the event saw 212 people visit the center for check-ups and flu prevention.
Choi Young-ok, 84, received a flu shot.
“I’ve been taking English, Chinese and music classes at the senior center,” she said. “I came to study and saw they’re offering health checks. To be able to get shots like this is really convenient.”
The center plans to open more health-related events in the future for area seniors, low-income residents and people without health insurance.
“There are more Koreans than you would think who are not receiving proper medical care because of a lack of information or due to other circumstances,” said Park Hyung-man, center director. “If local Koreans show interest and participation, we hope to expand to prevention for pneumonia and shingles.”
