Good News: Police sergeant unknowingly filmed buying food for homeless man

Nowadays any headline that involves a police officer usually comes with controversy, but Chicago Police Department Sergeant B. Hagarty bucked that trend unknowingly when he decided to lend a helping hand to someone in need.

On his way out of a local Chipotle restaurant, he noticed a man rummaging through the garbage looking for food. Sergeant Hagarty invited him back into the premises and told him to order whatever he wanted.

Another customer Rachel Mitchell witnessed the events unfold and began recording the interaction on video.

“Touched my heart so much, with all the cr** police are getting these days it reminds me there’s so much more good out there than anyone ever wants to give credit,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “If everyone did something simple like this every day the world would be a better place.”

The two men shook hands as they exchanged goodbyes.

Mitchell’s post was eventually shared hundreds of thousands of times on Facebook.

The Chicago Police Department picked up on the story and thanked Sergeant Hagarty for leading by example. He will retire by the end of year after 35 years of service.
