Good news: Two sisters raise $650,000 for water wells through origami

When sisters Katherine and Isabelle Adams, aged 9 and 11, found out that there were children, adults and entire villages in Ethiopia that didn’t have regular access to clean water, it broke their hearts.

They loved origami — the art of paper folding — so they searched for a way to incorporate that into raising money for the cause.

The Adams sisters first started with a modest goal of $500, which they hoped to achieve by selling their work at a local Starbucks. After the first day, they had already sold off their entire inventory. Eight weeks later, the effort raised over $10,000 – the approximate amount needed to build a well capable of servicing an entire village.

That was four years ago. Now they are the co-presidents of Paper for Water and have entire teams dedicated to making origami for a charitable purpose. The organization has raised over $650,000 since then and are continuing to grow their operation.

The sisters will begin a world tour in 2017 in which they teach origami and spread awareness about the issue.
