Good news: Volunteers, researchers save beached Orca through 8-hour process

A wild orca, also known as a killer whale, found itself stranded on some rocks Wednesday after swimming too close to the British Columbian shore as the tide slipped away.

Luckily there were whale researchers and volunteers who knew what to do once they had assessed the situation. They kept the creature cool by pouring water on it over an eight-hour period. Eventually, the tide rose enough that the orca could swim away on its own.

“She cried often, which tore at our hearts, but as the tide came up there were many cheers as this whale was finally free,” posted a Facebook user who witnessed the events unfold.

After the orca had found its way back to safety, it was quickly joined by its pod, which had been waiting nearby.
