Hong Sang-soo’s latest film invited to about 20 overseas film festivals

SEOUL, March 28 (Yonhap) — South Korean director Hong Sang-soo’s award-winning “On the Beach at Night Alone” has received invitations to about 20 overseas film festivals, the film’s local distributor said Tuesday.

The invitations arrived over a month-long period after the movie’s lead actress Kim Min-hee won best actress at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival on Feb. 18, according to Finecut.

“We received invitations from film festivals in the Czech Republic, Turkey, Argentina, Singapore, Israel, Peru, Poland, Australia, Russia, Canada, Chile, Austria, Britain, Sweden, the United States, India, Switzerland, Brazil, Taiwan and Hong Kong,” a company official said.

They include the Prague International Film Festival that opened last Thursday for a nine-day run and the International Istanbul Film Festival set to open April 5.

The distributor, however, refused to give names of other festivals that invited the Korean film, saying that they have yet to announce their official selections for this year. International film festivals usually unveil their line-ups one month before they open.

Boosted by the accomplishment in Berlin, the movie fares well in overseas film markets.

Its distribution rights have already been sold to Spain, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Brazil, and multiple distributors in the U.S. and Britain are currently showing interest in buying the rights, according to Finecut.

In South Korea, the film has drawn 23,534 moviegoers since it was released on Thursday despite the scandal involving Hong and Kim. The figure is higher than 17,924, the final local box office tally for Hong’s preceding work “Yourself and Yours.”

The film tells the story of Young-hee, an actress pondering her relationship with a married movie director while drinking with friends in a seaside town.
