U.S. advances to round of 16
June 26, 2014
The U.S. advances despite 1-0 loss to Germany at the World Cup
The United States lost to Germany 1-0 in Recife on Thursday, but it was still good enough for both countries to advance to the round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup. The U.S. will most likely face Belgium next.
Thomas Muller’s second-half goal was the difference between the two sides, as Germany finished top of Group G on seven points and the U.S. clinched second on goal difference at the expense of Portugal.
In the other ‘Group of Death’ game, Portugal defeated Ghana 2-1, as Cristiano Ronaldo scored the decisive goal, but they were in a position where they had to win by at least four goals.
