K-pop legend Shinhwa regains trademark rights to name
Longtime K-pop mainstay Shinhwa has finally taken back possession of the trademark rights to their name.
According to Yonhap, ShinCom Entertainment announced Friday that the six-member group received the rights from Joon Media, which had owned the rights to the name “Shinhwa” since their break from SM Entertainment in 2003.
Since 2012, ShinCom — a company created by the group in 2011 — and Joon Media have been in a legal battle over the trademark rights to the band’s name.
In 2013, Shinhwa used their logo but not their name on their 11th album cover.
In July last year, ShinCom was ordered by a court to pay 100 million won, or about $89,700, to Joon Media for the usage of “Shinhwa.” In August, the company name was changed from Shinhwa Company to ShinCom Entertainment.
ShinCom said it would change back its name to Shinhwa Company.
Shinhwa, which debuted in 1998, is K-pop’s longest-running boy band and has to date recorded 12 studio albums.
