Korean American Sailing Club to be launched
A sailing club for Los Angeles Korean Americans will hold its inauguration ceremony on Aug. 9.
Nam Jin-woo, the club’s founder, said it held a four-day free-sailing experience for Korean Americans last month to unexpected success.
“Afterward, 20 people attended our first meeting, and 13 showed interest in applying for membership, which led to the creation of the Korean American Sailing Club,” Nam said.
No license is necessary for leisure boats, although a seven-to-eight-week education, as well as practice with borrowed or purchased boats, is recommended, he said.
Club members will be connected to a sailing school at a discounted price, he said.
Nam, who enrolled in Laguna College of Arts and Design at age 38 and who ran Buena Park’s Gallery Artemis for a time, said he is known as “an artist who makes boats.”
He realized in his forties that he’d spent his younger years busy with business. A new hobby in extreme kayak fishing led to his interest in Internet searches for do-it-yourself wooden kayaks — his handmade boats now number 15.
In 2011, he purchased a 43-foot sailing boat in Annapolis, Md., named Ignatella.
“Many people think this is a form of extravagant leisure, but boats can be transported onto trailers for transportation and anchored down to live in according to size,” Nam said.
The club will hold its inauguration ceremony at Gardena Korean Restaurant at 7 p.m. on Aug. 9. For more information, call 714-924-0428 or email ignatella2013@gmail.com.
