LA City Council recognizes sex slavery victim’s effort to raise awareness
March 23, 2016
LOS ANGELES — An elderly South Korean victim of Japan’s wartime sex slavery received an award from the Los Angeles City Council in recognition of her efforts to raise international awareness about the atrocity.
The council presented the 88-year-old victim, Lee Yong-soo, with the award on Tuesday to honor her efforts to raise awareness of the sex slavery and to promote women’s rights.
LA’s first Korean American City Councilman David Ryu said although the painful past cannot be erased, it was a privilege for him to personally present her with an award.
Lee also received a special award from the California state Senate last week.
