LA Koreatown planning August festival for Korean independence day
By Kim Chul-soo
Los Angeles’ Koreatown will hold a three-day August festival for the 70th anniversary of Korean independence.
The event, hosted by the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles and the office of City Council President Herb Wesson and overseen by a committee, will be held Aug. 14 to 16 near Olympic Blvd. and Normandie Ave., according to organizers.
Korea celebrates August 15 as its independence day from Japanese colonial rule.
Under the theme “Together as One,” the celebration will see about 80 food and promotional booths, musical performances, a Korean War photo exhibition, contests and a special talk show, they said.
“This city was the base of the independence movement. We’re planning to celebrate Korean independence but also educate the younger generation on history,” said James Ahn, federation president.
