Lee Soo-man, SM donate $1 million
More celebrities give to help families of ferry tragedy victims
Actress Lee Mi-yeon and Jun Ji-hyun each donated 100 million won (nearly $100,000) to support the victims of the Sewol tragedy.
Lee made the donation to the Korean Committee for UNICEF. The committee acknowledged receipt of Lee’s donation on April 30 and plans to use the funds to support surviving students in their studies and to provide counseling services, in line with Lee’s request.
Jun from “My Love from the Star” made the donation for the same cause. The actress who is experiencing a second renaissance in her career made the donation under her real name Wang Ji-hyun.
Entertainer Lee Hwi-jae and his wife donated 100 million won in the name of their twin sons to the Community Chest of Korea.
Father and daughter, Chu Sung-hoon and Chu Sarang, donated 50 million won to the Ansan City Government to support the victims of the Sewol tragedy. Chu is a former mixed-martial-art fighter.
Singer Kim Jong-gook gave 50 million won, and K-pop star/actress U-yee donated 30 million won to the Korea Disaster Relief Association. Comedian Kim Byeong-man and successful screenwriter Kim Eun-sook donated to the association as well. The association’s officials said several other celebrities are donating anonymously.
However, the largest donation was made by the founding chairman of SM Entertainment Group Lee Soo-man.
According to the Korea National Red Cross, Lee and SM Entertainment donated 500 million won each for a total of one billion won (nearly $1 million).
