LG Uplus to invest US$2 mln in robot-making firm
SEOUL (Yonhap) — South Korea’s No. 3 mobile carrier LG Uplus Inc. said Thursday it has decided to invest US$2 million in a U.S.-based robot startup in line with its efforts to tap deeper into the Internet-of-Things (IoT) segment.
JIBO, established in January, aims to roll out the robot “JIBO,” which can socially interact with people, in the first half of 2016.
The robot connects to a WiFi network and is said to communicate with people and take photos. It can also provide education and entertainment content for children.
JIBO plans to tap into the Asian market including South Korea and Japan in the near future.
LG Uplus has been making efforts to emerge as the leader of the IoT industry by 2020.
IoT is a concept in which all tangible objects are connected to the Internet and can identify themselves to other devices in order to exchange necessary data for improved efficiency and convenience.
