Lim Hyun-gyu loses fight, but wins respect
plus $50,000 bonus for ‘Fight of the Night’
By Lee Kyutae
Perhaps he was battered and bruised and while the fight may have been over long before, Korean fighter Lim Hyun-gyu never gave up. He ran out of time to score a dramatic comeback win against former Strikeforce champion Tarec Saffiedine of Belgium but he certainly earned the respect of his opponent and the audience.
“I was pretty hurt,” Saffiedine admitted after the fight. ”He got me with a good punch.”
The Korean welterweight did not win the fight during UFC’s ‘Fight Night 34 in Singapore’ on Jan. 5, 2014. Saffiedine and his low kicks were too much to overcome as he lost on all three judges’ scorecards – 49-46, 48-47, 48-47.
Both men pocketed an extra $50,000 for staging the “fight of the night.”
