LOL, ‘emoji’ is word of the year
November 17, 2015
Oxford Dictionaries has chosen the emoji “face with tears of joy” as word of the year, Yonhap reported Tuesday.
It is the first time a pictograph has been selected.
Oxford Dictionaries said the symbol was chosen because it was the most used emoji globally in 2015.
Known also as LOL, it made up 20 percent of all emojis used in the United Kingdom in the past year and 17 percent in the United States. This is a marked increase on the 4 percent and 9 percent recorded respectively in the two countries in 2014.
Emojis, first used by Japanese telecommunications companies like NTT docomo, have gained popularity through iPhones and android gadgets, the report said.
