Michelle Wie wins first major title
Michelle Wie first threatened to win a major women’s golf title back in 2003 when she was 13-years-old. It took 11 more years, but the former child prodigy finally broke through with a performance worthy of the hype on Sunday.
Wie, now 24-years-old, closed with even-par 70 to win her first major championship– a two-shot victory over Stacy Lewis in the U.S. Women’s Open.
Lewis, the current No. 1 player in women’s golf, fired a 6-under 64 to make her work for it, but at the end of the tournament, there was only one player left standing with an under par score at Pinehurst No.2.
Wie finished at 2-under-par 278 to move to the top of the LPGA money list after winning the biggest event in women’s golf.
She has been one of the biggest stars in women’s golf since she was 13 and has played in the final group at Nabisco Championship before. Her popularity soared along with criticism when she competed against the men on the PGA Tour while still in high school and talked about wanting to play in the Masters, but all that seems like a lifetime ago.
“Oh my God, I can’t believe this is happening,” Wie said.
