More NY students than ever are choosing to learn Korean in schools

More New York students than ever are choosing to learn Korean in elementary, middle and high schools, the Korean Education Center of New York said Thursday.

During the last school year, the number of students taking Korean as a foreign language course was 2,503.

That number jumped 58 percent this year to 3,954 — all thanks to, the center said, the efforts of the Korean American community’s promotion of the language through organizations like the Korean Language Association.

According to the center, the Korean government’s funding toward increased Korean study increased by 44 percent since last year, from $260,000 to $380,000.

“It’s encouraging that support from the Korean government is increasing,” said Kim Young-duk, president of the center.

Kim said plans to introduce Korean to schools in Fort Lee and other New Jersey regions are underway for next year.
