N. Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s younger sister not married: report
SEOUL, (Yonhap) — North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s sister, Yo-jong, remains single, foreign news media claimed Thursday, amid lingering rumors that she has been married off to the son of a senior official.
Quoting a North Korean source who defected to the South last year, Washington-based Voice of America (VOA) reported that Yo-jong is still single, refuting the rumors of her marriage as groundless.
She had reportedly been married off to the son of the North’s de facto No. 2 man Choe Ryong-hae, the powerful secretary of the North’s ruling Workers’ Party. Other rumors also had it that the 28-year-old was married to a young official of the party’s important No. 39 office.
More recently, Kenji Fujimoto, the former Japanese sushi chef who worked for late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, said that Kim Yo-jong has not been married in his memoirs written after his visit to Pyongyang last month.
He visited the capital city on April 12-23, where he claims he had dinner with Kim Jong-un, his younger sister Yo-jong and party secretary Choe Ryong-hae. Fujimoto is one of the few foreigners who watched Kim Jong-un grow up, as he worked for the late North Korean leader for 13 years.
VOA also quoted the defector as saying that Yo-jong was promoted to the vice director post of the party’s propaganda department in 2014.
She is said to manage all her brother’s public appearances, including his itineraries and logistics, as well as act as a political adviser.
VOA also quoted the defector as saying that Choe Ryong-hae’s son, who was rumored to have been married to Yo-jong, was killed in a car accident in January 2013.
Japanese media previously reported that Choe’s son received treatment at a Singaporean hospital in early 2014 after he was injured in the car accident.
