Naver’s LINE app eyes ‘smart portal’ in Thailand

BANGKOK  (Yonhap) — The global chat app LINE, founded by South Korea’s internet giant Naver, aims to become a “smart portal” in Thailand, a regional strategic base, in the “Closing the Distance” project, officials here said Tuesday.

LINE Corp., headquartered in Japan, plans to bring users closer to businesses and services in the Southeast Asian nation.

“LINE will be reborn as a smart portal to offer useful and innovative services for the daily life of Thai people,” Ariya Banomyong, managing director of LINE Thailand, told a group of South Korean reporters on a group trip to Bangkok.

LINE plans to expand its TV, mobile payment and commerce services beyond the existing messenger platform, he added.

He unveiled an ambitious plan to export some of those services developed in Thailand to South Korea or Japan.

Thailand is a key market for LINE, seeking to turn itself into a “mobile-first” country.

Currently, an estimated 40 million Thai people use mobile services and the number is expected to rise to 50 million in 2018, 73 percent of the total population.

Among them, more than 33 million use LINE as their mobile messenger, according to the firm. The average daily use time is 83.7 minutes per person.

LINE TV has drawn more than 8 million downloads, with a special drama “HORMONES 3″ viewed 180 million times. LINE Music has also emerged as a top player with more than 7 million downloads.

LINE plans to place a priority on new services such as Rabbit LINE Pay and LINE Man for food and grocery delivery, said the official.
