NY artist group to host Hangul Day talk concert
By Tae Hong
Friday is Hangul Day, an annual celebration of the written Korean alphabet.
New York-based artist group K/REATE will put on a talk concert at Space GABI featuring three speakers — professors Ji Lee of School of Visual Arts and Austin Lee of Carnegie Mellon University, as well as K/REATE President Sang Lee — in a discussion on the possibilities of Hangul as seen in multiple perspectives.
Ji Lee, who also works at Facebook as a communication designer, is the creator of a new font, “suggu,” which combines English and Korean writing by substituting phonetic symbols.
Sang Lee has led other efforts by the group that include events for the March 1 movement, comfort women, Korean liberation day and Cheer Up Korea, a graffiti project following the sinking of the Sewol ferry boat last year.
“I’ve thought of Hangul creator King Sejong not just as a great leader but as an incredible designer,” Sang Lee said. “Through this talk concert, we’ll have a chance to reflect once more on King Sejong’s leadership, celebrate Hangul and think of how the alphabet can be used in the future.”
Entrance to the event is $10. The concert begins at 7 p.m. on Oct. 9.
