Online shopping mall ordered to pay $10 million won to Suzy
By Bahk Eun-ji
Suzy, a member of a girl band Miss A, will receive 10 million won ($8,710) compensation from an online shopping mall that used her name and face without permission from 2011 to 2014, JYP Entertainment said Friday.
Seoul Central District Court summoned both sides in the lawsuit, and recommended the mall pay the money.
The two sides agreed, an agency spokesperson said.
Publicity rights are the right to control the commercial use of one’s name, image and other aspects related to his or her identity.
The singer, 20, sued the mall for using her image and name in its sales advertisements _ “Suzy Hats”_ so that Suzy’s image would appear when users searched the term.
The mall also posted three photos of the singer, including a picture of her at an airport, on the mall’s homepage in 2013.
The court had dismissed the case, but JYP Entertainment lodged an appeal in February.
More than 50 celebrities _ including Bae Yong-joon, BoA, Psy and Jang Dong-gun _ have also filed similar suits.
