Park congratulates S. Korean fighter, badminton players for winning bronze medals
SEOUL, Aug. 19 (Yonhap) — President Park Geun-hye on Friday congratulated a South Korean taekwondo fighter and two badminton players for winning two bronze medals at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, saying their performances have “deeply touched” the hearts of citizens here.
South Korea’s Lee Dae-hoon won a bronze medal in men’s taekwondo on Thursday. Lee defeated Jaouad Achab of Belgium 11-7 in the men’s -68kg bronze medal match at Carioca Arena 3.
On the same day, Jung Kyung-eun and Shin Seung-chan defeated Tang Yuanting and Yu Yang of China 2-0 for the bronze medal in the women’s doubles badminton.
“Our country is proud of Lee Dae-hoon who showed the spirit of taekwondo to the world while truly enjoying the competition himself,” Park said in her congratulatory letter to Lee.
In a separate letter to Jung and Shin, the president said that through “fantastic teamwork,” the pair gave an “invaluable gift” to the nation.
