Philippines’ Edison: Researcher powers lights with saltwater

The Philippines is situated right along the equator and its position makes it highly susceptible to typhoons and earthquakes. As such, something as simple as a reliable electric light source can be a valuable commodity for its residents — especially one that can run on saltwater.

Lipa Aisa Mijena, an engineer and researcher from De La Salle University, discovered a way to power bright portable lanterns with just a glass of seawater and plans to share the technology with her country.

The invention has been dubbed the “Salt Lamp” and happens to be a safe and ec0-efficient alternative to other traditional electric light sources.

Mijena does want to commercialize the product, but her first priority is to help those in need through non-profit organizations.

The lamp can last for eight hours on a single fill up and can run smoothly for a year.
