Philly prepares celebrations for 70th anniversary of Korean independence
With Aug. 15, the 70th anniversary of Korean independence, around the corner, Philadelphia-area Korean Americans are preparing for festivities.
The Korean American Association of Greater Philadelphia’s annual Independence Day event has expanded this year to include a history “Golden Bell” quiz, a film screening and an Arirang flash mob with the Philadelphia Korean Youth Orchestra.
“We’re now seeing the second- and third-generation kids as time has passed, so we’ve organized a celebration that we can enjoy together,” said Song Joong-geun, association president.
The flash mob, expected to be the centerpiece of festivities, will see a 60-member orchestra and a 120-member choir perform the “Arirang” and the South Korean national anthem in front of Phildelphia City Hall, Independence Hall and Wentz Run Park.
The association is looking for event volunteers. For more information, call 215-935-6969.
