Rangers’ Choo enjoys strong May after disastrous April
ARLINGTON, Texas, May 31 (Yonhap) — South Korean outfielder Choo Shin-soo of the Texas Rangers picked up a hit Sunday to close out a strong May following a disastrous April.
Choo went 1-for-4 with a walk against the Boston Red Sox at Globe Life Park in Arlington to end May with a .296 batting average.
Choo batted just .096 in April but began the new month with a 14-game hitting streak, en route to raising his season average to .236.
Choo hit six of his seven homers this season in May, with 18 of his 23 RBIs also coming in the month. He recorded 16 extra-base hits, tied with Prince Fielder for most on the Rangers.
On Sunday, the South Korean came up empty handed with men on board. In the top of the first, Choo went down swinging against Joe Kelly with a runner on second and nobody out. Trailing 3-2, the Rangers put a man on second with two outs in the sixth, but Choo grounded out to second to end the rally.
The score was still 3-2 Boston when Texas had a tying run on second with one out in the ninth. Choo stepped up but hit a grounder back to closer Koji Uehara.
Later in the ninth, Josh Hamilton delivered a pinch-hit, two-run double as the Rangers walked off on the Red Sox 4-3.
Texas claimed three out of four in the four-game series against Boston.
Texas also had a solid May, with a record of 18-11 that included a seven-game winning streak.
