MBC announces plan to produce sequel to
Worldly popular Korean drama Daejanggeum (Jewel in the Palace)
The television network MBC announced Tuesday that it will produce the sequel to the worldly popular drama “Daejanggeum” or “Jewel in the Palace.”
The 2003 drama starring top actors Lee Young-ae and Ji Jin-hee against the Joseon (1392-1910) era was one of the jet engines that propelled the popularity of Korean dramas overseas.
MBC officials said last year in its forum that they will produce “Daejanggeum II” in 2015. But the network officials did not specify just when season two of the drama would start airing nor whether the original stars would return.
The fictionalized tale about a Joseon-era royal cook who later becomes the King’s physician was produced for $15 million, but it later earned about $40 million worldwide.
