S. Korea divided on activist efforts, North calls leaflets a ‘declaration of war’
North Korean defectors in South Korea are continuing to stage anti-Pyongyang demonstrations despite repercussions that are instigating border tensions.
An activist at the Seoul-based non-profit group Fighters for Free North Korea told The Korea Times that the group plans to send hundreds of thousands of leaflets into the North on Saturday as scheduled.
South Korean liberals and border town residents are urging the government to put a stop to these demonstrations especially after North Korea said the actions are tantamount to a “declaration of war.”
South Korean government officials insist that they have no legal ground to stop civilian-led demonstrations.
As for North Korean government officials, they have warned that Pyongyang would take further military countermeasures against the leaflet spread.
