S. Korea earns first-ever Women’s World Cup win, knockout stage berth
By The Korea Times Los Angeles staff
South Korea reached the knockout stage of FIFA Women’s World Cup in dramatic fashion.
S. Korea came back from 1-0 deficit in the second half to defeat Spain 2-1 Wednesday at Lansdowne Stadium in Ottawa, Canada.
It didn’t look good for S. Korea even after Cho So-hyun’s header at the 53rd minute mark tied the score at 1-1, but substitute defender Kim Soo-yun scored the winner in the 78th minute, lifting S. Korea to its maiden Women’s World Cup victory and clinching its first-ever knockout berth.
S. Korea finished second in the group with four points, while Brazil won the group with nine points after beating Costa Rica 1-0 for its third straight victory.
Costa Rica (2 points) and Spain (1 point) were eliminated.
S. Korea moves on to face France.
