S. Korean volleyball star Kim Yeon-koung signs with Chinese club

SEOUL, May 30 (Yonhap) — South Korean volleyball star Kim Yeon-koung has signed with a Chinese club for next season, her local agency said Tuesday.

Inspokorea said Kim has inked a one-year contract with Shanghai Guohua Life in the Chinese Volleyball League. The agency didn’t disclose the financial details of the transfer, but Kim has signed the best deal in the Chinese league history.

Last season, Kim received 1.2 million euro from Turkish club Fenerbahce before becoming a free agent.

“Shanghai showed their sincere intention to sign me,” Kim said through her agency. “I’ve enjoyed playing with Fenerbahce and won many titles, thanks to the club’s and fan’s support there. But now, I want to experience other leagues.”

Kim, 29, said in a previous interview that she will either stay in Turkey or move to China for the upcoming season.

Kim, considered one of the world’s best attackers today, returned home earlier this month after leading Fenerbahce to the Turkish league championship for the 2016-17 season. She has been playing with Fenerbahce since 2011.

Kim, who previously played with South Korea’s Heungkuk Life and Japanese side JT Marvelous, will play in a special match in Bangkok next month that features South Korea and Thailand volleyball stars. She will also play for the national team for the FIVB Volleyball Grand Prix that starts in July.
