Salinas kicks off Korean culture education program
The city of Salinas, Calif., and the Korean Language Promotion Committee of Monterey County has kicked off a Korean culture education program for young students.
The program, which held its first class last Saturday inside Salinas Police Activities League Youth Center for 11 students, is free of charge and seeks to spread Korean culture in the region.
Mun Yi, president of the committee, said efforts to introduce Korean culture to the region started five years ago. With a $3,000 grant from the county last year, she purchased 10 hanboks from Korea and other classroom supplies, she said.
Course content includes traditional fan dance, Korean instruments and children’s and folk songs, taught by Lee Young-sook, who was an instructor of Korean traditional dance at the Korean School of Monterey First Presbyterian Church for 10 years, and local volunteer teachers.
Classes are held every Saturday at 1 p.m., and free lunches are provided.
