San Bernardino-area Koreans on alert following mass shooting
The San Bernardino Korean American community is in shock following a mass shooting at a social service center that saw 14 killed by two shooters — a couple U.S. law enforcement officials are treating as potential terrorists affiliated with the Islamic State — Wednesday.
Many Koreans in Riverside County nearby, as well as those in the Inland area, are avoiding shopping malls and other crowded public spaces.
“The shootings happened near areas with heavy Korean populations, like Loma Linda, so people were very alarmed,” said David Kawk, president of the Inland Korean American Association. “After the Paris attacks, I thought a terror threat would only happen in a larger city. Seeing this happen in a comparatively remote, quiet area has everyone on alert.”
