Story of N. Korean refugee leading a new life in US to be published in English
The story of a North Korean refugee who is successfully leading a new life in America will unfold in the June 2 English-edition release of “Under the Same Sky: From Starvation in North Korea to Salvation in America.”
Joseph Kim, 25, suffered through a devastating famine that swept North Korea in the 1990s.
With his father dead from starvation, his mother missing and his sister unable to be reached after she left for China, Kim spent two years as a homeless person until he decided to escape the country in 2006.
With the help of Libery in North Korea, a human rights group, he landed in the U.S. in 2007, where he was placed in the foster system.
Kim is now a student at Borough of Manhattan Community College, where he is studying international business.
