Tanaka-Yankees agree on 7-yr. contract worth $155 million
The 24-0 Japanese ‘Monster’ pitcher Masahiro Tanaka has signed with the New York Yankees on Wednesday. Before he even threw a pitch in the Major League, he landed a seven-year contract worth $155 million, his agent, Casey Close, confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.
The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Korean left-hander Ryu Hyun-jin’s $36 million for 6 six-years contract pales in comparison.
But, the 25-year old Japanese right-hander is coming off an amazing undefeated season with 1.27 ERA.
The Yankees will also pay Tanaka’s Japanese team, the Rakuten Golden Eagles, a $20 million posting fee, and reportedly gave Tanaka an opt-out clause after four-years.
The Dodgers also wanted Tanaka, but the Yankees’ offer reportedly was considerably higher.
