The 15th Motherland Excursion for Korean American Youth kicks off July 14
An annual program to teach Korean American students about Korea kicks off July 14.
The 15th Motherland Excursion for Korean American Youth, organized by the Korea American Youth Assistance Coalition, will take 89 students in 9th and 10th grade on an 11-day trip to the Sejong campus at Koryo University in Korea to participate in the larger excursion program by the Overseas Koreans Foundation.
The excursion is designed to help students come into contact with their roots.
The OKF will teach participants — 432 in total from 51 countries, as well as 200 students from Korea — about Korean society, culture and history. Students will visit nine regions and try their hand in farm life, do a home stay, a one-day student experience and attend a talk concert.
Participants will learn Korean etiquette through home stays with local families.
“The fact that the future leaders of Korean societies overseas are visiting the motherland to experience history and culture is meaningful in that it strengthens the idea of one Korean identity,” said Cho Gyu-young, chairman of the OKF. “I hope these students’ bond with Korea becomes stronger through interacting with and cheering on Korea with the Korean students.”
An excursion program for elementary and middle school students runs seven days and begins July 22, with 136 participants, while an excursion for college students begins July 29 and runs through Aug. 5.
