The Korean Garden inside New Overpeck Park in Bergen County, N.J., announced in March and supported by 1492 Green Club, an environmental activism organization, held its first tree planting ceremony Saturday.

The club planted 200 lilacs from eight countries around the world, including varieties from North America, Iran, Germany and France, and the Korean “Miss Kim lilac,” inside the park.

1492 Green Club and Bergen County signed a Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU, earlier this year for a 10-year project that aims to transform New Overpeck Park into one rivalling Manhattan’s Central Park.

Korean pine trees, cherry blossoms from Jeju Island and other plants and trees from Mt. Seorak and Naejang in Korea will be brought to the Korean Garden next month.

“The 10-year project is finally starting,” said 1492 Green Club President Baek Young-hyun.

Baek hopes for donations and interest in the project from both the Korean American community and from regional governments in Korea.
