The largest Korean scholarship foundation in U.S. accepting applications
By Kim Chul-soo
The largest scholarship foundation yet for Korean students in the U.S., which will fund needy students regardless of citizenship status, has begun accepting applications.
The scholarship, started by the OTEFE (Opportunity to Earn Future Education) Foundation last year, will provide $480,000 per year to Korean students enrolled in universities and in graduate programs.
“Our goal when starting this scholarship was to help foster the dreams and hopes of students who have to put a pause on their education due to financial difficulties,” said John Kim, director of the foundation.
OTEFE said its application process does not take students’ citizen statuses into account, whether they be undocumented, exchange or international students.
More aid will be given to students who need it after an assessment of their needs and financial situations, and the minimum scholarship will be $2,000, it said.
“Our policy is that we will also support applicants who are not related to the Korean community, regardless of race,” another director of the foundation said.
OTEFE’s program started after it received $10 million from an unnamed donor.
The foundation is now accepting applications on its site until June 30. Contact info@otefe.org for more information.
