Traditional folk arts group coming to NY
Flushing Town Hall and the Korean Cultural Service New York are bringing South Korea’s master “kkuns,” performers of traditional dance and music, for a night of cultural extravagance Dec. 11.
The Dongrak Performing Arts Group is a leader of the yeon-hee genre, a form of Korean folk theater and “yeomin dongark” dance that uses movements “that originated from our ancestors who went against the tradition and hierarchy that ruled Korea in the past,” according to KCSNY.
The group, which was formed in 2013, won an award from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2014 at a national samulnori contest.
The show will feature traditional spinning dishes, drum dance and ritual music through six sets.
Tickets are free with online RSVP at koreanculture.org.
