Nine South Korean were dead or injured, as a passenger train was derailed in the southern city of Yeosu on April 22.

YEOSU, South Korea, (Yonhap) — A passenger train derailed in southern South Korea early Friday, leaving the engineer dead and eight passengers injured, police and rescue workers said.

A total of 23 people were aboard the Mugunghwa train when it went off the track in the southern port city of Yeosu around 3:41 a.m., officials said.

The number of those injured could rise, they said. Police said they are trying to determine what caused the accident.

Korea Railroad Corp. (KORAIL) said it has suspended operations of all rail services between Suncheon and Yeosu in South Jeolla Province to carry out recovery work. The rail authority said recovery work and repairs to the tracks could take up to 20 hours.

KORAIL said it plans to operate charter buses in the section to help move people.
