U.S. citizenship renouncement fee quadruples from $450 to $2,350
August 28, 2014
Starting Sept. 6, people wanting to renounce their U.S. citizenship will need to hand over $2,350.
According to the U.S. Department of State, which announced the fee change Wednesday, the new fee — previously $450 — reflects the actual cost taken by the government to process an application.
In addition, the fee for a K-category visa will rise from $240 to $265, while visa applications for immediate relative and family preference will rise from $230 to $325. Employment-based applications for an immigrant visa, on the other hand, will fall to $345 from $405.
