Upcoming film ‘Sado’ chosen as S. Korean submission to Academy Awards
September 2, 2015
South Korea’s submission to the 88th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film is “The Throne,” an upcoming period piece starring Yoo Ah-in and Song Kang-ho, Yonhap reported.
Each country is permitted one submission per year for consideration.
The Korea Film Council, which made the decision, said the film is set in Korean history but that it has qualities that would easily find appeal with non-Korean audiences.
“The Throne,” directed by Lee Joon-ik, follows the life of Crown Prince Sado during the reign of King Yeongjo.
Last year’s submission was Director Shim Sung-bo’s “Haemoo,” and the year before that Director Kang Yi-kwan’s “Juvenile Offender.”
“The Throne” awaits domestic release on Sept. 16.
