US schools dominate new global university rankings, SNU rates No. 72

1-Harvard, 2-MIT, 3-UC Berkeley, 4-Stanford, 7-CalTech, 8-UCLA, 10-Columbia

U.S. World & News Report released its first “Best Global Universities” ranking of 500 institutions from 49 countries.

The ranking compiled the list taking into account 10 factors, the analysis- and advice-giving media company said on its site.

The 10 indicators used included global and regional research reputation, publications, normalized citation impact, total citations, number of highly cited papers, percentage of highly cited papers, international collaboration, number of Ph.Ds awarded and number of Ph.Ds awarded per academic staff member.

American schools dominated the list with eight of 10 schools. Harvard University took the No. 1 spot with 100 points out of 100, followed by MIT, UC Berkeley, Stanford, CalTech (No. 7), UCLA (No. 8), University of Chicago (No. 9) and Columbia University (No. 10).

Meanwhile, Seoul National University was South Korea’s highest-ranked institution at a No. 72 tie with Australian National University, with 59.4 points.

Korea University was the second Korean school on the list, at No. 157 and 50.4 points, followed by Pohang University of Science and Technology (No. 173, 48.7 points), KAIST (No. 179, 48.3 points) and Yonsei University (No. 223, 44.4 points).

SNU saw its highest ranking come from the publications indicator, which ranked No. 16 globally. It came in as the No. 7 university in Asia, behind University of Tokyo (No. 24 globally, 71.3 points), Peking University (No. 39, 65.7 points), University of Hong Kong (No. 42, 64.7 points), National University of Singapore (No. 55, 62.6 points), Kyoto University (No. 60, 61.6 points) and Tsinghua University (No. 67, 60.3 points).
