Want to try a $20 cup of coffee in Koreatown?
Haus Dessert Boutique offers The Cup of Excellence (COE)
By Park Ji-hye
The next time you’re craving a $20 cup of coffee, head on over to Los Angeles’ Koreatown.
Haus Dessert Boutique, located on 6th St. and Serrano Ave., has begun its sales of the Cup of Excellence following its $15 cup of Hawaiian Kona coffee last year.
The Cup of Excellence, or COE, is regarded as the “Oscars of Coffee.” It is held for three weeks each year and lends its name to the winning coffee from a pool of samples from about 10 regions that include Brazil, Central America and Africa.
The COE’s price is explained not just by its quality but also by its limited availability due to a low level of distribution each year.
According to Haus, about 10 sales of the COE are made per day and up to 20 on weekends. The coffee is made hand-dripped there.
“For those who know coffee, the COE is the top 1 percent. It’s something they get excited about, something they want to try at least once,” said Kim Eun-sang, Haus owner. “Haus is the only place in Koreatown and even in L.A. that sells COE coffee.”
