1.5 Generation Korean American Named Chancellor for UW Bothell

Bjong Wolf Yeigh Introduced as New Leader on October 2nd

Korean born educator, Bjong Wolf Yeigh, 48, has been named as chancellor of the University of Washington Bothell.

A ’1.5 generation Korean American,’ Yeigh came to the United States when he was 11-years old. He will earn $285,000 annually and was appointed to the position in May 2013. He was formally introduced as the new chancellor on October 2nd. Washington State Congresswoman Cindy Ryu and Korean Consulate to Seattle Chan Shik Yoon were among those in attendance at his introductory ceremony.

Since 2008, he has been the professor and president of SUNYIT, the State University of New York Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome. 2008. During his tenure at SUNYIT, he secured $15.5 million capital grants for cybersecurity and nanotechnology programs and led efforts to gain two rounds of funding for regional economic development projects totaling $119.9 million. Working with the University at Albany, he helped secure a $240-million nanotechnology partnership. Overseeing the largest expansion of the campus to date, he guided the building of more than $100 million in capital projects.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Yeigh served as a tactical intelligence officer for Fighter Squadron Seventy-Four (VF-74) aboard the USS Saratoga (CV-60) in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. While on active duty, he completed the Strike Lead Attack Training Syllabus (SLATS), Navy Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun), the Navy Electronic Officer Course, and Navy and Marine Corp Intelligence Training. He held the rank of lieutenant upon his honorable discharge from the Navy Reserve in 1995.

He holds the following degrees: M.A. and Ph.D. in civil engineering and operations research from Princeton University; M.S. in mechanical engineering from Stanford University; A.B. in engineering science from Dartmouth College; and a graduate certificate in science and technology policy from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University.

He was elected as a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and serves on several national and state boards for engineering, economic development, public policy and education.
