3 broadcasters to launch UHD broadcasting

SEOUL, May 30 (Yonhap) — South Korea’s three major local broadcasters — MBC, KBS and SBS — will start ultra high-definition (UHD) broadcasting for the region in and around the Seoul later this week, the science ministry said Tuesday.

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning said the three broadcasters will transmit their content in super high resolution in the capital city, the port city of Incheon and other areas starting at 5 a.m. Wednesday.

UHD broadcasts provide four times the resolution of the current high-definition broadcasts, officials said. Also, viewers can experience various IP-based services when they connect their TVs to the Internet.

Initially, the three broadcasters set to launch UHD service in February, but put it on hold due to some difficulties in equipment purchase.

The ministry picked the U.S.-based Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 standard for the over the Europe-based DVB-T2 standard.

Viewers in the region will have to purchase a separate set-top box as UHD TVs manufactured by local TV makers have so far been based on the DVB-T2 broadcasting standard.

The ministry said it plans to expand UHD broadcasting coverage throughout the country by 2022. Other major metropolitan cities will start UHD broadcasting in December.
