Apt. residents to receive full compensation for chopper crash
By Kim Jae-won
Residents of an I’Park apartment in Samseong-dong, southern Seoul, will receive full financial compensation for damage caused after a Sikorsky helicopter owned by LG Electronics crashed into it, industry sources said Tuesday.
LG Electronics own an insurance policy from LIG Insurance which provides for compensation of up to 22.7 billion won ($21.5 million) for the accident. Among them, residents can be compensated up to 10.6 billion won, while the company will receive compensation for the crashed helicopter of up to 11.7 billion won.
Family members of the two pilots killed in the accident ― Park In-kyu and Koh Jong-jin ― will be given up to 210 million won of compensation, respectively.
Industry sources say that eight households of the apartment which suffered from the crash will be given compensation according to the extent of damage suffered. They are now evacuated to nearby top-class hotels, including InterContinental Seoul.
LG promised to do their best to fully compensate them.
Hyundai Development which constructed the apartment said that it will help examine the safety of the building which was built nine years ago. As the chopper crashed into between 24th floor and 26th floor of the apartment, walls and windows from 21th to 27th floor are broken.
“The apartment was built with state-of-the-art steel and concrete from 2001 to 2004. We think there will be no big problems restoring it fully,” said Han Jae-keun, a spokesman of the company.
The building holds apartments that are among the most expensive in the country with views of the Han River and because of the brand power of the construction company. A typical apartment costs over 50 million won per 3.3 square meters.
