Bus falls off cliff in northern China, killing 35 people
BEIJING (AP) — A bus fell from a cliff in north-central China on Friday, killing 35 people on board, authorities said.
Twenty-five people were killed instantly in Shaanxi province and 10 died in a hospital, the propaganda office of Chunhua county said in a statement. There was no word on the cause of the accident, and authorities said they were investigating.
The official Xinhua News Agency reported that the bus was carrying 46 passengers and that it fell into a ravine more than 30 meters (yards) deep near a forest park on Friday afternoon.
Another 11 passengers were being treated, with five in critical condition.
Bus accidents are common on China’s windy mountain roads, where drivers often ignore safety rules by speeding or carrying too many passengers.
