Hyun-Jin Ryu, with his first Major League playoff start in sight, ended the regular season with an abbreviated start on Sunday. Ryu allowed two runs and eight hits in four innings in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies but vowed to be better in postseason.

Ryu is drawing rave reviews for his regular season work as he finished with 14-8 record in 30 starts with a 3.00 earned-run-average (ERA). He struck out 154 while walking 49 in 192 innings and was second on the team with 22 quality starts. He allowed more than three runs just five times all season.

Ryu joins Kazuhisa Ishii of Japan as the only Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers to win 14 games in their first MLB season.

Ryu was especially strong at Dodger Stadium (7-4 with a 2.32 E.R.A.) and Ryu will start at home in Game 3 of the National League Division Series (N.L.D.S.) on October 6th.  He has faced the Atlanta Braves twice this season. He allowed a season-high five walks and two runs in five innings in Atlanta on May 17 but pitched into the eighth inning, allowing just one run at Dodger Stadium on June 7.

The following is a translation of Ryu’s post-game interview with Korean media.

-How will you prepare for playoffs?

▲Every game is a must-win situation now. I’ve faced Atlanta twice so I feel like I know them enough but I’ll make good use of time to study them more, to bring out the best possible results.

-How do you feel about what will be your first Major League playoff experience?

▲It hasn’t really hit me yet. It will be nerve wracking once the game starts, even if I’m not the one throwing on the mound that day. How I deal with those nerves, and how much I can relax out there, will influence outcome of the game.

-You weren’t particularly sharp in your last regular season start today.

▲Well, I knew going in that I wasn’t going to throw whole lot. I wish I could have gone five innings, but the pitch-count got high early, and I got taken out after only four innings.

-How would you evaluate your first season in America?

▲Better than expected. I think I put up some good numbers, like innings pitched and games started, and the season in general has gone well. I am most happy about getting through the season without any major injuries.

-Are you disappointed that you weren’t able to keep your ERA under 3.00?  Did you think about it much during the game?

▲Yes, I was aware of it. But I’ll get over it and concentrate on the next game.

-How do you feel about already having a reputation as a big game pitcher?

▲It’s not like I wasn’t nervous in other big games – like the Olympic gold-medal game and World Baseball Classic games, but I realize what’s at stake here. Since it’s not the regular season anymore, I understand that I have to possess the mindset to win every start. I’ll be out to win every game during the playoffs.
